Be it your home or office, disinfection and decontamination should absolutely be an essential part of your cleaning routine.

Did you know that on average, a keyboard or mouse contains 79,000 bacterial cells per square inch? Or that your much-loved mobile phone has 11,020 bacterial cells per square inch?

WHY IS DISINFECTION AND DECONTAMINATION IMPORTANT?

That might come as a shock to you, since we don’t usually find ourselves talking much about the amount of bacteria we find on daily objects.

A lot of the guidance out there talks about how to keep yourself and your family safe during and after the pandemic, such as how to prevent getting sick from COVID. These guidelines usually encompass topics such as mask-wearing, hand sanitiser and frequent hand washing.

While this advice is all well and good, rarely though do we see much guidance on selecting the right disinfecting chemicals for your home or office, or how to clean specific daily objects, such as the aforementioned keyboard or mobile phone. Concrete steps like these may be what’s missing from your cleaning routine, which may still find you coughing, sneezing and having allergy attacks, all of which are signs of mould contamination.

A common question we get is “What is the difference between decontamination and disinfection?”

Mainly, decontamination reduces the microbial contamination of materials or surfaces. It does not eradicate all microbes but brings them down to a lower level. Decontamination is usually done for settings that don’t need to be sterile, like your home. Eg: wiping down a countertop is decontamination.

Disinfection however eliminates all pathogenic organisms on surface areas, thus reducing contamination to a safer level than just decontamination alone. It is usually only possible to do with specialized equipment such as Novita dehumidifiers and ultraviolet (UV) lights, and is usually done for spaces such as chemistry labs or F&B outlets.

Both decontamination and disinfection is done via the  use of chemical disinfectants like alcohol and formaldehyde.

Which do I need?

We suggest that you decontaminate all “high-touch” surfaces, such as counters, tabletops, doorknobs and phones at least once a day by giving them a simple wipe down with wet cloths or non-chemical methods such as soap and water. This lowers the risk of bacterial and viral infections spreading, but germs will still build up over time. Hence, we recommend that decontamination should also be done at least twice a month by qualified disinfection specialists.

Got any quick decontamination tips or recipes?

  1. For a DIY decontamination hack that’s easy for you to rustle up on your own and low-cost, mix baking soda and vinegar and pour the mixture into the washing machine on your next load. The fresh, clean smell and soft fabric will thank you later.
  2. Always keep alcohol wipes for high-contact areas around the house and use one to wipe frequently. It’s much less daunting than trying to plan a house cleaning adventure at once.
  3. Invest in a good dehumidifier with HEPA filters that suck the bacteria and viruses straight out of the air. This will help you go longer between cleanings.
